sort of old-time, AM radio sisters’ harmony sound. Picture the little radio station in the middle of southern nowhere in O Brother, Where Art Thou, on a classic radio show like A Prairie Home Companion between ads for Dapper Dan and Powder Milk Biscuits, and then three beautiful singers huddled around an old school microphone

I will never hear the Lower Lights version of “Away In A Manger” without immediately picturing Mindy Gledhill, headphones on, singing with her newborn baby nestled on her chest. It’s a polaroid that plumbs to the heart of the song– beloved newborn baby, tired but happy mother*, singing at a volume just loud enough to soothe yet just quiet enough not to stir, the calm and still of a late night.

In 1861, Joshua Sylvester– referring to “I Saw Three Ships”– wrote: “It has always been a great favorite with the illiterate, and from its quaintness will be found not displeasing to the more refined.” No wonder I like it. Quaint. Not necessarily requiring literacy. Not completely off-putting to snobs. Kind of like alphabet soup?

Welcome to the first installment of The Story Behind The Song (heretofore referred to as TSBTS for both brevity and sanity’s respective sakes), wherein we’ll give a little glimpse behind either the song or the recording or both for our new album Come Let Us Adore Him. Today, we’ll pull back the curtain a bit on “Oh Come, All Ye Faithful.”

The Rest of The Rest of The First Tour (Spokane)

Spokane was a huge surprise. George & his minions really rallied and suddenly an empty, cold warehouse was filled with a bunch of kind people. It was humbling to show up in these cities, where we’ve never been, and be so supported. I genuinely hope we came through for you all. We sure tried. By the end (and this was a mere 3-date tour), with so much of our own setup and takedown to do (since we don’t use traditional venues with their already existent PAs, lighting, seats, stages), it can be a bit draining. But every night, our audiences brought us an energy that gave each show its breath.

The Rest Of The First Tour (Tri-Cities)

Tri-Cities! You make it hard to say, “ARE YOU READY TO ROCK, (city name)?!!!” But that’s ok. You showed us a ton of love and we got nothing but love for you, babies. Forgive me for that entire opening. So, our kind friend Marilyn Lott (and her family and some helpful friends) brought us up to Columbia High School in Tri-Cities, Washington for one of the best Lower Lights shows in our brief history.  Marilyn wrote a great review on [...]

First, First, First: One Night In Boise

There is a first for everything and this? This was a whole heap of firsts for The Lower Lights. First show of our first tour. First show outside of Utah. First visit to Jud’s, home of the 1-pound burger. First show with George on electric bass. First show with Scott on electric guitar. First t-shirt sold. First button given away. In the First Congregational United Church of Christ. First, first, first. You get the point. It’s midnight and I’m [...]
